This piece has been developed with the idea to unify two parts of a big living room space. The wave-like transitions in the geometry are nice to the eye and help reduce the reverberations of the sound waves in the space. The solid warm piece adds texture and colour to the living room. This parametric design piece is a product made of solid spruce wood which is CNC milled and painted with transparent lacquer.

Duality

Ambition is the driving force for all creators, this is also the name of the fashion studio that has commissioned us to work on this project. For a new showroom we designed this three dimensional wall piece, which attracts the attention to the interior of the store as well as once in front, it focuses the attention to the defined boxed clothes displays. The choice of material and color is passive - wood and white walls with the idea that the clothes are what is giving the color. This design has more than 1400 single elements with unique length and position. The design is a product of systems of information that allows for this complex geometry to be manufactured and assembled. Variations can be obtained within minutes thanks to the smart information stream management, providing us with detailed calculations.

Swell

This project investigates into production techniques for ceramics, it finds opportunity in creating endless variations of forms very rapidly. It captures the moment of surface tension and translates it to a tactile object. The tiles are slip casted in plaster molds made using a tailor made machine which saves time and material. The added value to the product is that it can be used in a number of arrangements including complex geometrical patterns that can be made using an algorithm made for the purpose. Thanks to a flexible non-stick surface, this new tool uses numerically controlled servo motors to produce unique forms with perfect finish, posing the question of the future of ceramic design. Paraceramica

This work is centred around the ritual of transportation and containment of water. The meeting point of the rough industrial textures found around the port and the connection between the city and water. I designed a wooden tray that resembles the shape of the numerous barges passsing through Rotterdam, which serves as the vessel that carries a set of water containers. A set of textured a small vase and a jug both containers for water currently 3D printed in PLA.

Twist

Rotterdam, the biggest port of Europe, where the largest ships call home and make our contemporary life possible. In order to maintain the flow of ships and goods, the depth of the waterways is constantly maintained through dredging. Heavy metals and other pollutants deriving from shipping, industrial and agricultural activity make the sediments problematic. We are left with big amounts of polluted river dredge as a result.
Currently over 750 000 tonnes of sediment is dredged yearly and a big part of it goes to the designated landfill at the port called Slufter. 
Over time the disposal of this waste became more and more expensive as a result of regional regulations and closure of disposal sites. Is there a financial incentive to look out for alternative use other than dumping? 
As a product designer I see an opportunity to take advantage of the characteristics of this material, namely its clay content and the possibility to make ceramic products. By doing so the pollutants remain encapsulated within the ceramic product. The choice to design for the construction industry is motivated by the negative impact this sector has on the environment and the opportunity to prevent large amounts of material from ending up as a waste. By not using virgin materials we convert a linear material stream to a circular one, encapsulating the pollution in the meantime. 
This often invisible and intangible material stream comes to us in the form of facade tiles that form tangible surfaces and tell a story of the water with their visual language.Their shapes take inspiration from the waves and allow the architect and designer to create a unique surface every time, giving wider application to the product.

Sedimentile

This work is a self driven month long experimentation in clay printing with a DIY extruder and recycled clay. The book Advanced 3D printing with Grasshopper by Diego Garcia Cuevas & Gianluca Pugliese was used as a guide. Printer used is an Ultimaker classic with DIY clay extruder. The shape finding methodology was based on the star shape, how many corners exactly does a star have? Starting from 3 and going all the way to 33 I explored the design possibilities to make a number of objects. They expose the natural beauty of the toolpaths of the printer and the thick layers of clay. In this principle I have used simple lofts, scaling and rotation to obtain geometries that further expose the movement of the machine captured in clay. I used Grasshopper to design the objects and generate the Gcode, which the printer then used.

Clay 3D printing

Looking at how rain droplets create ripples in the water we can learn about hidden patterns and perhaps try to imitate them. In this project I used the ripple principle to create a three dimensional version of it in wood. The commission is for a lobby of a building where this natural form will provoke calm and a sense of tranquility. The solid Ash wood panels are CNC milled and the wood is left to show it’s hidden inner rings and layers. This relatively new technique of working uses black and white imagery to generate the three dimensional surfaces.

Organica

“Fighting fire with fire” could define the inspiration between this project. For a private interior I developed this sound wave inspired geometric wall piece. It is both attractive to the eye with a pixel like elements that are helping better the ambient acoustics in the room. This parametric design piece is a product made of solid spruce wood which is CNC milled and painted.
